Connecting the Dots

Last week was pretty whirlwind – the never ending cycle of assignments from the two classes I am taking, the usual string of errands that need to be run, the housework, and of course the dreaded tax deadline! I know you all have a laundry list of things to do – some of the entries may be a bit different but the essence of it is still the same.

What really kept me going is the continuous symmetry that presented itself. One of the definitions of symmetry is “beauty as a result of balance or harmonious arrangement.” This beauty played itself out several times – a call to a friend so a mother could end an exhaustive search for prom dresses for her daughter; connecting one fitness guru and child advocate with a person who shares the same passions and happens to be traveling to the area where she lives; looking for information for one thing that results in information to many in my network; Getting resounding endorsement from a noted professor about a program that you just recommended to a friend. There were more than a dozen examples and NONE of them took more than ten minutes to make happen. These are the type of exchanges that I live for.

Connecting your circle to a person or a piece of information that is going to move them in the right direction does not have to be a Herculean effort. Truth be told it has five core elements:

  • Your strong belief in the person

  • Your knowledge and network

  • Communication in any form (text, e-mail, internet, telephone, letter, carrier pigeon)

  • A person’s ability to communicate a need, desire or vision

  • A network that, on the strength of knowing you and where you are coming from, is willing to help someone you know with their need, desire, and vision

Now this happened to be a particularly stellar week for these exchanges and trust me, I periodically get disappointed by people who fall short in receiving or delivering the “goods.” There are many people who are not selective about who they lend their support to and have no problem sharing their resource with someone who just doesn’t get it. On the flipside there are many people who are MORE than willing to accept a helping hand, but never seem to pay it forward – they don’t get it either! I try not to become so jaded that I can’t bring myself to connect the dots for someone who really needs it. I don’t waste a lot of time trying to uplift those who have 25 pound weights in their shoes, because I know that energy can be used to uplift someone who is ready soar!

So at some point today or this weekend, reach out to someone in your circle, see what’s going with them and share what’s going with you. More than likely this conversation will result in another conversation, a web page of information, or contact with someone who knows how to get to exactly where you want to be.

I would love to hear your connect the dot stories!

With that I wish you all the best today and always.
